Aegir
A family of naval task force support ship designs
BMT Defence Services in conjunction with Skipskonsulent AS, an independent Norwegian tanker designer, has developed a family of naval task force support ship designs that offer navies an environmentally responsible, affordable and low-risk replenishment at sea capability in purpose-designed new-build vessels.
Design Approach
Aegir® is designed to make it possible for a local shipyard to build a new Aegir auxiliary as cost-effectively as the alternative of acquiring and converting an existing commercial tanker.
The Aegir design family combines a mature, double-hull, twin-screw hull-form proven in the commercial market with a general arrangement designed from the outset for conducting replenishment at sea.
Aegir's propulsion configuration facilitates standard naval auxiliary practices for reliable and efficient operation at task force speeds over extended periods, yet is flexible and economic at all other times.
Adopting commercial design rules means local shipyards are able to build and support Aegir.
The baseline design makes allowances for a number of capability-enhancing options from the outset, making the Aegir approach even more attractive.
Benefits
The Aegir support ship design offers:
-
Low programme, financial and technical risk
- A no-compromise replenishment capability
- IMO regulatory compliance
- High availability and operational flexibility
- Local industrial base involvement
